7.2. Artificial nutrition and hydration
Artificial nutrition and hydration is the giving of fluids and nutrition
via an intravenous cannula (IV) or an enteral tube, for examples PEG tubes.
Research informs us that artificial nutrition and hydration does not alter the outcomes for the person with dementia. It should not be considered for someone with end stage dementia where swallowing difficulties are a feature.
Using artificial nutrition and hydration poses many ethical and practical dilemmas for people with later stage dementia.
